How Rodents Can Affect Your Health

Rodent Threats

Rodents, including mice, rats, squirrels and chipmunks, can enter a home through almost any size opening or crack.  It is important to inspect for rodent droppings, especially in undisturbed areas such as in pantries, under baseboards, in attics and along walls.  Rodent droppings often cause allergic reactions but can also introduce bacteria and diseases.

More frequently, rodents serve as carrier agents, carrying bacteria (such as salmonella) which can contaminate food sources, kitchen surfaces and equipment.  AEL Pest Solutions, your source for Villa Rica wildlife control, have trained rodent control professionals who can offer the expertise and knowledge of rodent extermination to best protect your health and rid your home or business of a rodent infestation.

Below is additional information regarding some of the most common rodent infestations as well as prevention tips for homeowners to ward off these critters.

Mice & Rat Control

Mice and rats pose many threats to you, your family and your home. Mouse urine can cause allergies in children. They can also bring fleas, mites, ticks and lice into your home. Rats are known for the damage they cause by chewing on and through materials, urinating on food, and eating stored foods. They also spread numerous diseases.

Mice and rats can enter structures through very minute openings (mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel and rats through spaces the size of a quarter). Rats are excellent climbers and often enter a home in the fall when outside food sources become scarce. They can also be found under, in and around structures, such as in fields or wood piles.

Gray Squirrel Control

Squirrels usually enter homes in the late fall as the evening temperatures drop to look for warmth to nest for the winter. Their playful nature and early rising are what gives them away as homeowners either hear them scurrying around in the attic or coming and going at dawn.

Squirrels can do considerable damage to exterior trim and siding of a home as they widen a current hole or make a new hole in which to enter. Once in the home they can and will gnaw on electrical wiring possibly causing a short or a fire. Squirrels can also be carriers of fleas and other unwanted organisms that will infest the structure after they gain entry.

Flying Squirrel

The flying squirrels don’t really fly, but glide into attics from trees. They do this by means of a thin skin that extends out from the sides of the body and connects the front and hind legs as shown in the above picture. In “flying,” the squirrels leap spread-eagled and use their outstretched gliding membranes for gliding and their bushy tails for guidance. Glides of 60 meters (almost 200 feet) or more have been recorded.

Flying Squirrels can enter the attics through the eaves and soffits thru small cracks. These squirrels may easily enter the space between the roof top and fascia board, chewing the area for a wider entry point.

Raccoon Control

Raccoons are basically nocturnal but will look for food during the day. They will engage in social behavior with other raccoons but they are usually thought of as being solitary. Raccoons will nest in attics or crawl spaces of structures.

Raccoons can carry rabies and roundworm. The roundworm can be contracted by someone not wearing breathing protection while cleaning the bathroom area of raccoons. Fleas and other parasites may be associated with raccoons nesting in the attic or crawlspace. They cause damage to structures when creating an entry into the attic or crawl spaces.
